INGREDIENTS :

2 tablespoons canola oil
One 4-pound first-cut brisket, trimmed of most visible surface fat
2 medium onions, halved and thinly sliced
2 medium carrots, peeled and cut into
1-inch pieces
2 medium parsnips, peeled and cut into
1-inch pieces
1 medium turnip, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
1 cup red wine
3 cups beef broth
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons stemmed thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme
1⁄2 teaspoon salt, or more to taste
1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 bay leaves
3 tablespoons bottled white horseradish
1 tablespoon potato starch whisked into
1 tablespoon water in a small bowl, optional

DIRECTIONS :

Heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Swirl in the canola oil, then add the brisket. Brown on both sides, turning once, about 8 minutes. Transfer to a large cutting board; set aside.
Add the onions, carrots, parsnips, and turnip to the pot; cook, stirring often, until lightly browned, about 5 minutes.
Pour in the wine and bring to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits on the pot’s bottom.
Pour in the broth; swirl in the mustard until smooth. Add the thyme, salt, pepper, and bay leaves. Bring to a full simmer. Nestle the brisket into the sauce. Spread the horseradish on any exposed portion of the meat.
Cover and place in the oven. Bake until the meat is fork-tender, 3 to 31⁄2 hours (or even 4 hours, depending on the cow’s size, health, and diet).
Remove the meat and vegetables from the pot. The brisket is quite tender, so hold it up with a large spatula to keep it from breaking apart. Place all on a large, clean cutting board. Place the vegetables on a serving platter.
If you want to thicken the sauce, set the pot over medium heat and bring the sauce to a simmer. Whisk in the potato starch mixture; cook, whisking constantly, until slightly thickened, about 1 minute.
Slice the brisket against the grain. Place it on the serving platter. Discard the bay leaves, check the sauce to see if it needs salt, and pour the sauce over the meat and vegetables.

Variations:

Substitute a large potato, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes, for the turnip. Reduce the broth to 2 cups and add 11⁄2 cups canned diced tomatoes with the broth. Add one 4-inch cinnamon stick with the bay leaves.

Slow Cooker Variation:

Brown the meat in a large skillet as in step 1. Add all the vegetables, aromatics, and mustard to a 6-cup slow cooker; pour in 1⁄2 cup red wine and 1 cup beef broth. Coat the brisket with the horseradish. Nestle the meat in the cooker, cover, and cook on low until fork-tender, about 8 hours.

6 slices of bacon
1 head of broccoli, broken into florets
1 head of cauliflower, broken into florets
2 carrots, julienne cut
1 cup celery, finely chopped
1/2 cup sweet onion, chopped
1 cup Kraft mayonnaise with olive oil
2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup crystalline fructose

Fry bacon until crisp in a skillet. Drain fat and crumble. Set aside.

Whisk the crystalline fructose, cider vinegar, and mayonnaise with olive oil together in a bowl. Set aside.

In a large bowl toss the bacon, broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, onion, and celery until well mixed.

Pour the sweet dressing over the vegetables.

Toss gently to coat the vegetables. Salad will taste better if allowed to sit in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving. It will last up to 3 days in the refrigerator. Toss again just before serving.

How to prepare Boneless Chicken Escabeche? You don’t have to build a killer fire or heat your broiler for half an hour to cook chicken cutlets. But you should grill or broil them fairly close to the heat source, which will enable you to brown the outside of the chicken before the inside dries out and toughens. Escabeche means that the meat is first cooked, then marinated, though not necessarily for any length of time. Breast and thigh meat both work perfectly here; if you mix them, remember the thighs take longer. And you can use any Vinaigrette in place of the garlicky variation listed here; you can also use other herbs instead of parsley. Other protein you can use: boneless pork or veal loin. Recipe makes 4 servings. Preparing time is about 20 minutes if eaten immediately or up to 6 hours if Marinated. Ingredients and easy directions:

EASY BONELESS CHICKEN ESCABECHE RECIPE

INGREDIENTS :

About 1 ½ pounds boneless chicken (breasts, cutlets, tenders, or thighs), pounded to uniform thickness if necessary
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
½ cup Roasted Garlic Vinaigrette
Chopped fresh parsley leaves for garnish

DIRECTIONS :

Heat a charcoal or gas grill or the broiler to moderate heat and put the rack 4 inches (or less) from the heat source. Rub the chicken with the oil and grill or broil quickly, 3 to 4 minutes per side (to check for doneness, cut into a piece with a thin-bladed knife; the center should be white or slightly pink). Meanwhile, gently warm the vinaigrette.
Remove the chicken and put it on a serving platter; pour the vinaigrette over it. Serve immediately, garnished with the parsley, or refrigerate for 1 to 6 hours to develop the flavors, then serve cold or at room temperature, garnished with parsley.

Other way to prepare Boneless Chicken:

Grilled or Broiled Boneless Chicken with Wasabi Sauce:  No more difficult, a little more exotic: In place of the vinaigrette, combine 1 halved clove garlic, ½ cup rice or other mild vinegar, 2 tablespoons mirin or 1 tablespoon honey mixed with 1 tablespoon water, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger, ½ to 1 teaspoon wasabi powder or 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish, and some salt and pepper. Warm this mixture as for the vinaigrette and proceed with the recipe. Garnish with chopped scallion and/or cilantro.

English Custard ? History and Recipe

I thought as English Custard is an Iconic English Recipe and food, I thought my article would be interesting to fans of English Food. Custard was known in English Cuisine at least as early as the fourteenth century. One of the most popular and quintessential English Custard’s is “Birds Custard Powder” which I reccomend to any cook who wants to make the perfect English custard.

The first reference to custard in England was as almond milk or almond cream In a history of the Abbey of Croyland, England, Laurence Chateres in 1413. It contained almonds, thick milk, water, salt and sugar.

Not all custards are sweet. A quiche is a savoury custard tart. Some kinds of timbale or vegetable loaf are made of a custard base mixed with chopped savoury ingredients. Custard royale is a thick custard cut into decorative shapes and used to garnish soup or broth.

Bird’s Custard (a brand name) is the original version of what is known generically as custard powder. It is a cornflour-based powder which thickens to form a custard-like sauce when mixed with milk and heated to a sufficient temperature. Bird’s Custard was first formulated and first cooked by Alfred Bird in 1837, because his wife was allergic to eggs the key ingredient used to thicken traditional custard.

In some regions of the United Kingdom the popularity of this type of dessert is such that it is simply known as “custard.” In such cases, general usage of the word may be more likely to refer to the “Bird’s” custard rather than to the traditional egg-based variety.

In recent years, “instant” versions (containing powdered milk and sugar and requiring only hot water) and ready-made custard in tins and cartons have also become popular.

A food and drink survey carried out in 2000 found 99% of customers recognised the brand which accounts for 45% of the custard consumed in the UK. Bird’s Custard is also exported to several countries around the world, including the United States, where it is popular among several ethnic groups. Many ethnic and specialty stores across the United States sell the product. In Canada Bird’s Custard can often be found in many popular grocery supermarkets.

In addition to the Bird’s brand, generic cornflour-based custards are widely available.

“English Custard”

 

Ingredients

1/3 cup sugar
2-3 egg yolks
1 teaspoon flour
1 1/2 cups milk
1 piece vanilla bean

 

Method

Work up sugar and egg yolks with a wooden spoon until smooth and creamy. Add flour. Scald milk and vanilla bean together and then add egg yolk mixture to it, little by little. Return to saucepan and cook slowly, stirring constantly until it comes to the boiling point. Do not allow to boil. Remove vanilla bean. Cool, stirring vigorously at first and then from time to time to prevent crust from forming on top. Serve cold or a little warm. Other flavoring may be used. For coffee flavor use 1/2top milk and 1/2 strong coffee, for chocolate flavor add grated chocolate to taste to hot milk. Serves to to 3.

3. Onion and Beer Hair Pack. Grind one onion bulb in a blender. Add one teaspoon of coconut oil and a small cup of beer to make a gel-like paste.

Massage the mixture onto the scalp and apply to the hair. Leave it on until the mixture will dry up on the scalp. Afterwards, rinse the hair with water and an herbal shampoo to remove the smell and the residue.
